2010 Run of the Charles!

Sunday, April 25, 2010 – Keewaydin Alumni from New England, and beyond, gathered in Dedham, Massachusetts for the 27thRun of the Charles. Following the lead of Matt Pierce, Dunmore Alum, parent, and member of the foundation board of directors, Keewaydin paddlers have been gathering for this event since 1995. What was once one green canoe, has become four, as teams from all of the Keewaydin Camps gather to compete in the five stage, 24 mile relay. The race is run over mostly flat water and over seven portages, the longest being 800 meters. The transition zones are a mix of slow and fast as paddlers greet fellow Keewaydineesi who they might not have seen since last summer and then push them off down the river in pursuit of the finish line....

2010 Spring KEEC Season Draws Near...

Greetings from the freshly thawed shores of Dunmore,
One of the most fascinating times to be around Lake Dunmore is during the early spring. Watching the tree buds swell and begin to pop is our cue that soon the Keewaydin Environmental Education Center (KEEC) campus will be abuzz with school children from all over Vermont. This year marks our 37th year of operation, and I often wonder if Abbey and Waboos thought KEEC would prove to have such a lasting affect on the Vermont community....

At 95, Mattawa Cabin Gets a Face Lift!

This winter Mattawa cabin received a much needed renovation. Built in 1915 by Peter Brown, it was originally used as the Manitou Wigwam. In the late 1920’s, and early 1930’s, while Brown was the island caretaker, he and his family used the cabin as their home. Sometime later the cabin was repurposed as the home to the youngest of the Manitou Wigwam campers and, in combination with the three linked cabins of Abitibi, Gowganda and Metachawan, built c. 1916-20, the cabin comprises the Manitou Wigwam. ...
